Sinners (Ryan Kyle Coogler making the vampire troupe fresh again) and One Battle After Another (an unexpected deep psychological thriller from Paul Thomas Anderson) are rating high on critics’ top movie lists for 2025 (both films amazing and deserving of the accolades bestowed upon them), but in my list of top movies for 2025 you might find an undiscovered gem – here’s some other top movies you may have missed:
NUREMBERG Psychological / War / Drama Preview Review ★★★★
A courtroom, psychological thriller dominated by the dialogue of characters that show all the shades of humanity, both the good and bad and all that’s in between.
THE HISTORY OF SOUND Drama / Romance Preview Review ★★★★
You’ve got to be in the mood for this one, but if you can quiet yourself, the music draws you in to be folded into the story.
BUT ALSO JOHN CLARKE documentary Preview Review ★★★★
As stated by Lorin (John Clarke’s daughter), ‘If you’ve never heard of John Clarke or Fred Dagg? This is for you. A fun, silly, smart, hilarious reminder that however disempowered we feel in a world flooding us with reasons to be miserable, there’s power in finding the fun wherever we are.’
FROM THE WORLD OF JOHN WICK: BALLERINA Action / Thriller Preview Review ★★★★
Ballerina has the same tone as the John Wick films but with more weight on the storyline.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s still plenty of action.
At one point, I was musing about the difference of showing the carnage left after the violence, when there’s a surprise of creative car action I didn’t see coming, until I did. Then more bullets.
Inventive, Ballerina doesn’t disappoint.
FLOW Mystical / Animation Preview Review ★★★★
The soundtrack is the animal sounds that communicate the question of, Friend or foe? accented with an orchestral build, a crescendo for those poignant moments that enhance, not overtake, the gentle story about these animals who come together and grow to help each other while continuing to be who they are.
A genuine pleasure to watch.
PADDINGTON IN PERU Family Preview Review ★★★★
The whole production is detailed to delight and a whole lot of fun, with yes, a few tearful moments.
I can’t quite give a higher rating than Paddington 2. Hugh Grant owned his character, the villain-of-many-disguises, Phoenix Buchanan, and I was chuffed to see his cameo here in Paddington 3.
But Paddington in Peru has its own humour (think Antonio Banderas as Mr. Hunt, and his ancestors, the resemblance lending hilarious moments to his gold madness) and is a good time, for, well, everyone.
THE LIFE OF CHUCK Mystery / Drama / Fantasy Preview Review ★★★★
A, reaching for the stars and capturing the light, type of film that’s: funny, sweet, cynical (because it’s cynical times) and life-affirming – a recommended watch to celebrate the end of 2025.
In addition, here’s a few noteworthy thriller releases, worth a look:
